Common names:          Sticky nightshade

Location within National Botanic Garden of Wales: Double walled garden, Quadrant C.


Description: Erect annual with hairs and prickly stems. Purple or white flowers. Plant is poisonous. Grows to 1.5m. Cultivated throughout world as a ornamental.

Natural Distribution:  South America- Brazil


Derivation of name: Not known.
 
 
History of Cultivation:  Invasive weed in south Africa


Uses:  Sticky nightshade has been used as a trap crop to protect potatoes from potato cyst nematode.


Growing instructions:  It is not withstand frost and is usually propagated from seed in spring. The plant is not fussy in type of soil grown as long as it is moist. It can grow in semi-shade or no shade.
