Astronomy Day

Stars come out for special day

Visitors to the National Botanic Garden of Wales will be rubbing shoulders with the stars on Saturday July 4.

Astronomy Day at the Garden will be a real treat for star-gazers as it features a special inflatable planetarium, solar telescopes and air-powered paper rockets – that can fly up to 200ft in the air.

Organiser Allan Trow, of Glamorgan University, said: “It’s going to be a great day out for all the family and a chance to learn a little about our universe.”

There will be talks and a planetarium show on the hour every hour between 10am-4pm – the show lasts for about 40 minutes.

Allan, who lectures in the University’s school of physics and astronomy, added: “It will certainly be lots of fun and we are hoping for a big crowd to come along and join in the with this special day.”

Astronomy Day at the Garden is being held as part of the International Year of Astronomy which is a global event organised by Unesco.

Admission to the Garden costs £8 for adults, £6.50 for concession and £4 for children. A family ticket (two adults and up to four children) is £19.50.

The Garden is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 10am-6pm, with last entry at 5pm.
