Key Stage 3

Our programmes are designed to meet and enhance the National Curriculum for Wales Programmes of Study and Skills Across the Curriculum

PLANTS IN ACTION

Find out how plants get the materials they need to stay alive, how they successfully colonise new areas and how they are of economic importance. A visit to the Simply Plants exhibition in the Great Glass House and an exploration of the Double Walled Garden will reinforce key concepts.

LIFE IN PONDS

Use the dipping pools to collect fresh water plants and animals, then sort and identify them. Find out more about their habitat, and the ways they are adapted to survive. Back in the Aqualab pupils will build up food chains and webs and handle seasonal data. Conservation, biodiversity and the value of school ponds will also be considered.

EVERYDAY CHOICES

Our Everyday Choices trail explores how the Garden has made choices to ensure we minimise our environmental impact on planet Earth, as well as participating in a Global plant conservation programme.  We challenge pupils to consider what everyday choices they can make in school and at home to join us in trying to live more sustainably.
This programme is a valuable support to schools following the Eco Schools Scheme.

PLANTS IN MEDICINE

Past, present and future. Pupils will walk a timeline exploring the history of plants in Welsh Medicine, travelling from myths and mystery to modern day medicine. Pupils will identify and collect plant samples and learn how to extract the medicinal chemicals
in the Lab.

SELF LED GROUP VISITS

Paths to Maths

This is a school teacher led Group Visit programme, using the Garden to provide an ideal environment for pupils to experience maths in a real and relevant context. Pupils will explore themes including time, shape, scale, area and grid references as they travel round the site. This programme is supported by our "Paths to Maths" teachers pack.

Art at the Garden
Come to the Garden and be inspired by nature, architecture, sculpture and history; order a Teachers' Art Pack and explore the possibilities of using the Garden as a basis for printing, collage and sculpture projects following a teacher-led visit.

English and Arts
The Garden has become a highly popular venue for art projects and for creative writing and poetry. The beauty of the Garden and the global significance of our conservation work provides stimulating and authentic contexts for pupils to engage in creative interpretation of the Garden.
